Setting a cost cap in TikTok Ads Manager
TikTok's cost cap and bid cap bidding strategies let you tell the algorithm the maximum you're willing to pay per result, rather than letting it chase volume at any price. The number you enter is only useful if it's grounded in unit economics — set it above your max allowable CPA and the algorithm will happily spend you into a loss while hitting every KPI you gave it.
Start conservative: set your cost cap at 85–90% of the max allowable CPA this calculator returns, giving yourself room for the fees, refunds, and discounting that don't show up in a simple unit-economics model. Review actual CPA against the cap weekly for the first two weeks of a new campaign, since TikTok's delivery system needs a learning period before cost stabilizes.
Reading dollar contribution
Dollar contribution is what's left from a single order after product cost, fulfillment, and payment fees — before you've paid anything for the ad that drove it. It is the absolute ceiling on CPA: pay more than this to acquire the order and you've lost money on it regardless of what ROAS the platform reports.
Break-even ROAS at the unit level
Because TikTok reporting is typically most useful at the campaign or ad-group level rather than order level, converting max CPA into a break-even ROAS lets you sanity-check reported ROAS against a target without recomputing unit economics for every campaign review.
Frequently asked questions
What if I sell multiple SKUs at different prices?
Run this calculator once per SKU or SKU group with similar margins, or use your blended average order value and a weighted-average product cost across the mix.
Should I include TikTok Shop commission here?
Yes — if you're selling through TikTok Shop rather than driving traffic to your own site, add the Shop commission percentage into the Payment Gateway / Platform field alongside your payment processor fee.
Does this account for returns and refunds?
Not directly. For categories with meaningful return rates, reduce your effective AOV by your historical return rate before entering it, or treat the output as a best-case ceiling and set your actual cost cap lower.
